8 Places to Visit Around Skardu

From the high plains of Deosai to the cold desert and historic forts, these are some of the places to include in a Skardu itinerary.

Skardu is often the first stop for travellers exploring Baltistan. The town is a useful base, but some of the region’s most memorable places lie beyond the centre, along side valleys, rivers and high plateaus.

1. Upper Kachura Lake

Upper Kachura is known for its clear water and mountain setting. A lakeside walk or boat trip can make a relaxed half-day, depending on local conditions and services.

2. Lower Kachura and Shangrila

Lower Kachura is an accessible stop from Skardu, with a distinctive lakeside setting. It is often combined with other nearby viewpoints.

3. Deosai National Park

Deosai is a vast high-altitude plateau with open grassland, wetlands and mountain views. The route is seasonal and conditions can change quickly, so visit with a suitable vehicle and check access before setting out.

4. Sheosar Lake

Within Deosai, Sheosar Lake is one of the best-known viewpoints. Allow enough time for the journey and remember that altitude can affect how you feel.

5. Katpana Cold Desert

The dunes near Skardu offer a striking contrast with the surrounding mountains. Early and late light can be especially good for photography.

6. Kharpocho Fort

Above Skardu, Kharpocho Fort offers a perspective over the town and the Indus valley. The climb is steep in places, so wear suitable footwear and take water.

7. Shigar Valley

Shigar is known for its heritage architecture, orchards and views towards the Braldu valley. Shigar Fort is a notable cultural stop.

8. Kharmang and Manthoka Waterfall

East of Skardu, Kharmang has riverside villages and waterfalls, including Manthoka. Travel times can be longer than they look on a map, so avoid overloading a day trip.

How many days should you allow?

Three to five days gives a useful introduction to Skardu and nearby valleys. Add more time if you want to visit Khaplu, Kharmang or Deosai at a comfortable pace. If you are connecting with a trek, build in acclimatisation and weather flexibility.
