A First-Time Visitor’s Guide to Northern Pakistan

Practical advice on getting around, planning travel days, packing for changing weather and travelling respectfully in the mountain regions.

Northern Pakistan rewards travellers who give themselves time. Distances can be deceptive, weather can change quickly and a journey that looks simple on a map may involve long mountain roads. A little preparation makes a big difference.

Choose a realistic route

Decide which regions matter most to you. Baltistan, Hunza, Astore, Gilgit and Chitral are all worth exploring, but trying to cover everything in a short trip can leave little time to enjoy each place. Choose fewer stops and allow time for the journey between them.

Build flexibility into transport

Domestic flights can save time, but mountain flights are weather-dependent. Road journeys may also be affected by landslides, construction or seasonal conditions. Keep a buffer before international departures and avoid scheduling important connections too tightly.

Pack for more than one climate

Lower valleys can be warm while evenings and higher elevations are cold. Bring layers, sun protection, comfortable walking shoes and rain protection. For trekking, use a gear list suited to the route and season rather than relying on a general holiday packing list.

Take altitude seriously

Some popular destinations sit at considerable elevation, and trekking routes climb much higher. Plan a gradual ascent, stay hydrated, avoid rushing and learn the symptoms of altitude illness. If you feel unwell at altitude, tell your guide or travel companion and follow appropriate medical advice.

Carry some cash

Card acceptance and ATM availability can be inconsistent outside larger centres. Ask your accommodation or local operator about practical cash needs before leaving town, and do not rely on one payment method.

Respect local communities

Dress thoughtfully in villages and religious places, ask permission before photographing people, and follow local guidance around customs and private property. Buying local products and using local services helps spread the benefits of tourism.

Travel with care

Take reusable water bottles where safe refilling is available, carry your rubbish out, avoid disturbing wildlife and use established trails. In protected areas, follow park rules and the advice of local authorities.
