Northern Pakistan is home to communities who share their valleys generously. A few simple habits help ensure visitors are welcome and that places stay special.
Dress and behaviour
Modest dress is appreciated everywhere. For both men and women, that usually means covered shoulders and knees, and loose clothing. Women may prefer a scarf for visiting religious sites. Public displays of affection are not customary.
Photography
Ask before photographing people, especially women, and respect a refusal. Do not photograph religious ceremonies without permission. Drone use is regulated, so check the rules before you fly.
Religious sites and festivals
Many mosques and shrines are active places of worship. Remove shoes where required, speak quietly and follow local guidance. In communities such as the Kalash, follow your hosts' instructions about which areas and ceremonies are open to visitors.
Hospitality
Tea and food are offered as a sign of welcome. Accept graciously, and reciprocate with thanks or a small gift. If you stay with a family, ask what would be appreciated.
Protecting the environment
- Carry out your rubbish and reduce single-use plastic.
- Stay on trails and use designated campsites.
- Use water carefully, as supplies can be limited in villages.
- Do not disturb wildlife or pick plants in protected areas.
Supporting local people
Use local guides, drivers and guesthouses, buy crafts directly from makers and tip fairly. Make sure porters and crew have proper clothing, food and insurance.
Travelling with awareness
Conditions and sensitivities can change. Check local guidance, especially near borders, and follow the advice of your hosts. Read our travel guides and learn about culture and heritage.
