Some of the world's most remarkable roads wind through Northern Pakistan, and the journey between places is often as memorable as the places themselves. These are the routes worth planning around.

The Karakoram Highway

The Karakoram Highway climbs from the plains through deep gorges to Gilgit, Hunza and the Khunjerab Pass. It is the backbone of the north, passing viewpoints of Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi and a string of villages. Travel it slowly, and expect delays after rain.

Skardu to Gilgit through Rondu

This route follows the Indus River through a spectacular gorge. Villages cling to terraces above the water, and the road narrows in places. It is a long day, so leave early and treat it as a highlight rather than a transfer. See Rondu for more.

Astore to Skardu via Deosai

In summer, a high road across the Deosai Plains connects Astore with Skardu. It is bumpy and beautiful, crossing plains of wildflowers at more than 4,000 metres. The route closes with the first heavy snow.

Skardu to Khaplu

The road along the Shyok River is shorter and gentler, with views of the Karakoram. It is easily done in a day and links two of Baltistan's finest heritage destinations. Read about Khaplu.

Over Shandur to Chitral

For adventurous travellers, a high-altitude route links Gilgit-Baltistan with Chitral over Shandur Pass, best done in summer with a local driver.

Planning tips

  • Use an experienced local driver and a sturdy, high-clearance vehicle.
  • Start early, avoid night driving and carry water and snacks.
  • Build buffer days into your itinerary, as landslides can close roads.
  • Check conditions locally before every long leg.
